Privacy Policy

Effective Date: March 3, 2026

Last Updated: March 3, 2026

1. Introduction & Scope

Welcome to LearnAbout, an online educational platform for homeschool families operated by LightTree, LLC ("LightTree," "we," "us," or "our"). We are a United States-based limited liability company committed to protecting the privacy of our users, especially children.

This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and what rights you have regarding your data. It applies to all users of the LearnAbout platform, including our website, web application, and any related services.

Because LearnAbout is designed for families with children, we take our responsibilities under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the California Online Privacy Protection Act (CalOPPA), and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) seriously. We have built our platform so that parents are always in control of their children's information.

By creating an account or using LearnAbout, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use our platform.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information We Collect from Parents

When a parent creates a LearnAbout account, we collect the following information:

  • Email address — used for account login, communication, and account recovery
  • First and last name — used to personalize your account and communications
  • Family name — used to identify your family group within the platform
  • Password — stored in hashed (encrypted) form; we never store or have access to your plain-text password
  • Payment information — if you subscribe to a paid tier, payment details are collected and processed directly by our payment processors (Stripe and/or PayPal). LearnAbout does not store your credit card number, bank account details, or other financial information on our servers

2.2 Information We Collect About Children

Children do not create their own accounts or provide information directly to LearnAbout. Parents provide all information about their children. The information we collect about children includes:

  • Display name — a first name or nickname chosen by the parent, used within the platform
  • Birth date — used to tailor educational content to the appropriate age and developmental level
  • Learning progress data — quiz scores, experience points (XP) earned, time spent learning, mastery levels, and skill completion status, all generated through the child's use of the platform
  • Avatar and character customization choices — selections the child makes to personalize their learning experience
  • Quest theme preferences — choices that shape the child's learning journey within the platform

If a parent chooses to create a separate login for their child, the child's account uses a username and password only. No email address is required from the child. The parent's email address serves as the recovery email for child accounts.

2.3 Information We Collect Automatically

When you or your child use LearnAbout, we may automatically collect certain technical information:

  • Session data — temporary data that keeps you logged in and allows the platform to function
  • Device and browser information — browser type, operating system, and screen resolution, used to ensure the platform displays and functions correctly
  • Usage data — pages visited, features used, and time spent on the platform, used to improve the learning experience
  • IP address — collected by our hosting provider as part of standard web server operations

We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how families use LearnAbout. GA4 collects anonymized usage data such as pages visited, session duration, and general geographic region. IP addresses are automatically anonymized by GA4. This data is used solely for improving the platform and is never used for advertising, remarketing, or user profiling. Google Analytics cookies are non-essential and are only activated after you provide consent through our cookie banner.

3. How We Use Information

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

  • Providing the service — to create and manage accounts, deliver educational content, track learning progress, and enable the gamified learning experience
  • Improving the platform — to understand how families use LearnAbout, identify areas for improvement, fix bugs, and develop new features
  • Communicating with parents — to send account-related notifications, respond to support requests, and provide updates about the service (we only communicate with parents, never directly with children)
  • Processing payments — to manage subscriptions and process payments through our third-party payment processors
  • Ensuring security — to protect against unauthorized access, fraud, and other security threats
  • Complying with legal obligations — to meet our obligations under applicable laws and regulations

We do not use any information for targeted advertising. We do not sell, rent, or trade any personal information to third parties. We do not use children's data for any purpose other than providing and improving the educational service.

4. Legal Bases for Processing (GDPR)

For users in the European Union and United Kingdom, we process personal data under the following legal bases:

  • Contract performance — processing necessary to provide the LearnAbout service you have signed up for, including account management, content delivery, and progress tracking
  • Consent — where you have given explicit consent, such as parental consent for the collection of children's information, or consent for non-essential cookies. You may withdraw consent at any time
  • Legitimate interests — processing necessary for our legitimate business interests, such as improving the platform, ensuring security, and communicating with you about the service, provided these interests do not override your rights and freedoms
  • Legal obligation — processing necessary to comply with applicable laws and regulations

5. Children's Privacy

Protecting children's privacy is central to how we have designed LearnAbout. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and apply its principles to all child users regardless of location.

5.1 Parental Consent

We do not collect personal information from children. All information about children is provided by a parent or legal guardian who has created an account. By adding a child profile and providing your child's information, you as the parent provide verifiable parental consent for the collection and use of that information as described in this Privacy Policy.

5.2 What Children Can Do on the Platform

Children who use LearnAbout can:

  • Complete educational activities, quizzes, and quests
  • Earn experience points and track their learning progress
  • Customize their avatar and character
  • Choose quest themes

Children cannot:

  • Create accounts without a parent
  • Provide personal information directly to LearnAbout
  • Contact other users or be contacted by other users — there are no social features, messaging, or public profiles
  • Make purchases
  • Access any advertising

5.3 Parental Controls and Rights

Parents have full control over their children's information and can at any time:

  • Review all information collected about their child, including learning progress data
  • Update or correct their child's information
  • Delete their child's profile and all associated data
  • Refuse further collection by removing the child's profile or closing the parent account
  • Manage child login credentials — create, change, or remove separate child login accounts

To exercise any of these rights, log in to your parent account and manage your child's profile directly, or contact us at the address provided in Section 15.

6. Information Sharing

We share personal information only in the following limited circumstances:

  • Payment processors (Stripe and/or PayPal) — when you subscribe to a paid tier, your payment information is sent directly to and processed by these providers. They operate under their own privacy policies
  • Hosting provider (Pantheon) — our platform is hosted on Pantheon, a US-based hosting provider. Pantheon processes data on our behalf as part of hosting and delivering the LearnAbout service
  • YouTube (youtube-nocookie.com) — educational videos may be embedded using YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, which limits data collection by YouTube. YouTube's privacy policy governs any data they collect through embedded videos
  • Google Analytics — receives anonymized usage data (with your consent) to help us understand platform usage patterns. Google Analytics data is not used for advertising
  • Legal requirements — we may disclose information if required to do so by law, court order, or government regulation, or if we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, your safety, or the safety of others

We do not sell personal information. We do not share personal information with advertisers. We do not share children's information with any third party except as described above for the purpose of providing the service.

7. Cookies & Tracking Technologies

LearnAbout uses a minimal number of cookies, primarily to keep the platform working:

  • Session cookies (essential) — these temporary cookies are necessary for the platform to function. They keep you logged in and allow you to navigate between pages without losing your session. They expire when you close your browser
  • Authentication cookies (essential) — these cookies remember that you are logged in so you do not need to enter your password on every page. They expire after a set period or when you log out
  • Google Analytics cookies (non-essential) — these cookies collect anonymized data about how visitors use the site, such as pages visited and session duration. These cookies are non-essential and are only set after you provide consent through our cookie banner, as required by applicable law. You can withdraw consent at any time via the "Manage Cookie Preferences" link in the site footer

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Disabling essential cookies may prevent the platform from functioning properly.

8. Data Security

We take the security of your information seriously and implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect it, including:

  • Encryption of data in transit using HTTPS/TLS
  • Secure password hashing — we never store plain-text passwords
  • Access controls to limit who can access personal data within our organization
  • Regular security updates to our platform and infrastructure
  • Hosting on Pantheon's secure, professionally managed infrastructure
  • Payment information handled entirely by PCI-DSS compliant processors (Stripe and PayPal) — we never see or store your payment card details

While we strive to protect your personal information, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security but are committed to following industry best practices to protect your data.

9. Data Retention

We retain personal data as follows:

  • Active accounts — your data is retained for as long as your account is active and you continue to use LearnAbout
  • Account deletion — when you request account deletion, we will delete your personal data and all associated child profile data within 30 days. This grace period allows for account recovery in case of accidental deletion
  • Payment records — transaction records may be retained as required by tax and accounting laws, even after account deletion. These records are maintained by our payment processors (Stripe and/or PayPal) under their own retention policies
  • Anonymized data — we may retain anonymized, aggregated data (which cannot identify you or your child) indefinitely for the purpose of improving our platform

10. International Data Transfers

LearnAbout is operated from the United States, and all data is stored on servers located in the United States through our hosting provider, Pantheon.

If you are accessing LearnAbout from outside the United States, including from the European Union, United Kingdom, or Canada, please be aware that your information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States. By using LearnAbout, you consent to this transfer.

For users in the European Union and United Kingdom, we ensure that any transfer of personal data to the United States is conducted in compliance with applicable data protection laws.
